G.A. West Journeys - Michael Rowell

A CAREER STARTED WITH ONE SIMPLE “YES”

How each of us enters into the construction industry can be very different; some start for financial stability and travel opportunities, while others may see it as their only option. For G.A. West’s Electrical & Instrumentation Project Manager, Michael Rowell, his journey began when he answered a simple question with “yes.”

“When I graduated high school, I was asked if I wanted a job as an electrical helper. I saw an opportunity to make new friends, make good money, and learn a trade that would always exist.”

Sometimes starting and taking that first step is all it takes to change the trajectory of your life. That one decision set Michael on a career path that he never imagined would still be going strong 25 years later.

LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENCE

Taking the leap into electrical construction with no prior knowledge, Michael’s training was largely hands-on.

“My training was mostly on the job, working with some really good electricians/teachers. I started out as an electrical helper and moved my way up being a journeyman, foreman, general foreman, superintendent, and now project manager.”

With 19 out of his 25 years of experience being with G.A. West, Michael has had his hand in a lot of key projects for G.A. West, ranging from chemical plants to steel mills, and everything in between. However, success in this industry isn’t just about physical labor; it requires essential skill such a strong communication, adaptability, and a positive attitude.

“Taking good notes, having an open mind, good communication, and keeping a good attitude are all important,” he says. When it comes to challenges, making the right call is always the priority, “I always think about the outcome before I make the decision and make sure it is best for our company and employees.”

EMBRACING CHANGE & CHALLENGES

For Michael, every project is a new challenge that he welcomes with open arms.

“I enjoy the challenge of each project, meeting new people, and completing the job successfully. I’ve learned the job site is a hands-on classroom. You will get out of it what you put into it.”

As the industry evolves, so does his approach.

“The safety culture has changed for the better. Electrical and Instrumentation has gotten a lot more automated.”

A couple of things that aren’t going to be changing - Michael and his team’s dedication to education, safe-mindedness, and working efficiently with other crafts and contractors. Those characteristics are just a few of the reasons that led to his biggest accomplishment.

“One accomplishment in my career that I’m proud of is earning the trust of different clients and getting the opportunity to do future work.”

With all of this in mind, Michael’s one piece of advice he’d give his past self, and others, starting their careers in the electrical construction industry is this, “Pay attention more while working in the field and ask more questions about how the different tasks are performed.”

Michael Rowell, is just one of the many amazing individuals G.A. West employs. G.A. West is grateful to have him on our team and is looking forward to what the future holds for this partnership!
